Despite cooler temperatures in 2009, vine maturity in this vineyard was normal throughout the year. Budbreak and bloom occurred in April and May respectively, and the vines looked good. Laterals were pulled and the fruit zone was opened up so that speckled light could reach the fruit. A mild summer in late July led to a long veraison window, so we dropped green clusters to maximize quality. We waited patiently for flavors to develop and tannins to mature. We night harvested this vineyard in mid-October at the peak of development.
Stelling Cabernet is a showy wine, both in the aromas and on the palate. The 2009 vintage has aromas of jammy, black fruits, chocolate and cedar. Similar flavors develop on the palate, including a medley of blackberry and cassis. The French oak pairs beautifully with the fruit, offering its own layers of spice, toast and vanilla. Layer upon layer, this wine offers an elegant structure with smooth, coating tannins that expand into a lingering finish.
